Shadowing at school or nursery

Welcome! The City of Oulu has 84 early childhood education units (day-care centres), 46 comprehensive schools and 10 upper secondary schools.

The workshops are aimed at teachers, other education professionals and students who are interested in learning by watching a teacher (or principal) at work. The placement is a 5-day experience in a school or nursery, and starts with a short introduction and a tour of the school/ nursery. During the days, participants observe the work of one or more teachers. At the end of the week, there will be a final discussion on experiences and reflections.

Theme:
- Default topic: Finnish education / early childhood education
- Or request the lessons of a specific subject that you want to follow.

Shadowing is possible in schools:
- from September to mid-December, and
- from mid-January to mid-May,
- except during school holidays (weeks 10 and 43, Christmas and Easter) and public holidays.
And in kindergartens:
- between August and mid-December, and
- between mid-January and mid-June,
- except on Christmas and Easter holidays and public holidays.

Reservation:
- Shadowing is only possible with prior reservation. Please send us an email (eduoulu (at) ouka.fi) with your preferred date, group size, school level (early childhood/sub-school/secondary school) and possible theme/curriculum.
- The price is per participant, minimum 4 participants.
- Larger groups are split into two or more schools/day-care centres.

Available for a separate fee and with advance booking:
- Lunch at the school/day-care centre, price per person.
- Presentation/workshop on a specific topic, priced per hour.

The language of instruction in the schools is mainly Finnish, unless you specifically wish to follow lessons in English, German, French, Spanish or Swedish, for example. The language of the teacher and of the job shadow is Finnish or English.
